Day Nine of the 12 Wines of Christmas brings us the crisp and delicious 2013 Sauvignon Blanc from Flowstone Wines in Margaret River WA.
I was lucky enough to first try this wine at the James Halliday Top 100 tasting event recently, where it was awarded a well deserved 97 points.
It was also here that I first heard the story behind the Flowstone vineyard and label.
The curve of the brushstrokes represent two landscapes – the grey cave landscape that Flowstone draw inspiration from, and the vineyard landscape, which changes colour to represent each grape variety.
The wavy nature of the brushstrokes also mirror the Margaret River horizon, and a flow of water.
Flowstone is a relatively small vineyard, with only 2.5ha, but wow do they make the most of what they grow!
Drawing on knowledge of the area and years of experience, the team at Flowstone have adopted practices of minimal synthetic chemical usage, retaining high levels of organic matter in the soil, and most importantly, tending to good vine balance.
The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect example of the kind of wine that can be made with such knowledge, experience and care.
On the Eye: Bright gold with green hues
On the Nose: Nectarine, passionfruit and citrus tones
In the Mouth: Refreshing with layered texture. The nectarine and passionfruit aromas definitely deliver on the palate.
This Sav B would be the perfect accompaniment to the seafood dinner many Aussies enjoy post Christmas Lunch food coma.
Fresh and crisp, with a lovely balanced acidity, and perfect for a Summer afternoon!
It’s no wonder Flowstone was named the 2015 Winery of the Year by the Wine Companion!
